Wikipedia joins the internet blackout in protest of SOPA

The tech world has been watching the evolution of the Stop Online Piracy Act as it makes its way through the US Government. Most recently, Wikipedia announced that they will be joining other popular websites such as Reddit in ‘going dark’ on Wednesday, January 18th in protest of SOPA.

Wikipedia hopes to spread awareness about the destructive nature of both SOPA and PIPA. The blackout simulates the censorship of free speech that would be possible if either of the proposed acts passed. When people try to access Wikipedia this Wednesday, they will be unable to do so.

Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, tweeted “This is going to be wow. I hope Wikipedia will melt phone systems in Washington on Wednesday. Tell everyone you know!”

Here at TILPRO, we are keeping a close eye on both SOPA and PIPA, and will be anxious to see how effective the January 18th blackout is.
